Mob Justice?

Many may call the events that occurred on the University campus shocking, disgraceful or a disappointment but is there a deeper meaning to this occurance. It appears that a breakdown took place, as this person had been allegedly escorted off campus twice for unknown activities in the bathroom. Apparently, this came to a head when a student felt threatened by this person and he was attacked by a mob and severely beaten. However, this is the University of the West Indies and it has been constanly reminded to us in our aspirations to the brighter future in high school that those of us who made it to university represented the top five per cent of society. As it is put to us the “cream of the crop” , the future of the nation but this incidence goes deeper than we thought. For a country that has zero tolerance for the public display of any sexuality that goes beyond the norm not even to say that homosexuality is illegal in Jamaica. As the U.S. have in their army policy “don’t ask, don’t tell”; as long as no one knows for sure even if they suspect it, then all will be fine, well physically at least. There has been a long history of hate and violence towards homosexuals with regards to music, stereotypes in the media, our laws and now our universities? Although no one is forcing any ideologies, to physically harm some one is not the right path to take. As Christopher Given says “The students reading for degrees in various disciplines had the opportunity to show where our society is going and did: right down the drain.”
